General DSL Setup Information

First, you must have installed a network card. See the manufacturer's instructions on doing so.

Static vs. Dynamic IP Addresses:

Most routers are configured for Dynamic IP selections, if you have requested routable/static IPs use the static IP setup directions. An IP address can be thought of as an address whereby places on the Internet such as a DSL connection can be located. In some cases it is preferable to have the address always be the same and in other cases the addresses can change randomly providing some security from intrusion. The fixed address is called a static IP and the randomly assigned address is a dynamic IP. Reasons for a static IP can be hardware firewalls, VPNs, some software such as games, multiple servers on the network need to be routable. Most DSL routers are configured for Dynamic IPs.
