DSL Setup with SpeedStream 5200 Bridge

You have ordered DSL service from Binary Net. Our service is provided over lines and equipment that is provisioned by Windstream. You will receive a contract in the mail to sign and return to Windstream before Windstream sends your 5200 bridge directly to you. The kit that comes with the bridge makes the installation relatively easy If you are using a single PC.

The new SpeedStream equipment supplied by Windstream for personal DSL connections does not have routing capabilities and cannot be directly configured to use static IPs. Because of this it is advisable to have a firewall or DSL router that attaches between the bridge and your PC.

If you are connecting a single PC Please follow instructions in part A.

If you are using a DSL router or router/switch Please follow instructions in part B. This type of connection can be configured with static IPs.

A)

  1. Remove equipment from the box and locate the telephone cable, Ethernet cable, USB cable and the filters.
  2. The telephone cable goes between the phone wall jack and the bridge… plug it into both jacks.
  3. Now you need to determine how your PC will be connected to the bridge, if you are using a software firewall such as Black Ice, look on the back of your computer to see what type of connection cable you will use. If you have an Ethernet card installed there will be a receptacle that looks like a phone jack only is larger, in this case you will use the beige cable that came with your kit. If you do not, you will use a USB cable. The USB port is normally near your mouse or keyboard receptacles on the back of your PC. The USB cable is the black cable. Select the cable you need and plug in your bridge directly to the PC.
  4. Now you will need to insert the CD into your CD reader and install the software. If the installation wizard does not start automatically after inserting the CD, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and then drive that is your CD reader. Once that opens, double-click on the icon that says "Tango Installer". This will walk you through the setup step by step.
  5. Select "Other ISP" from first screen.
  6. You have already determined the type of connection during step 3 when you connected the PC to the bridge. Select the option appropriate to the connection you chose.
  7. Click "Next" and proceed to the agreement and then click "Accept". The next screen has a video that steps you through the install, but if you are comfortable just proceed with the "Next" button. The installer will check your computer to make sure you have adequate resources to use the software.
  8. Install your line filters and continue. Your PC is already connected so continue to the next screen.
  9. Install the Tango software by following the directions on the screen. You may be asked to reboot your computer during the process. Go ahead and do so if prompted. The setup should continue automatically once the system comes back up.
  10. You will now be asked for your e-mail information.
    • Select the e-mail program you prefer.
    • The POP3 server entry should be: pop.binary.net
    • The SMTP server entry should be: smtp.binary.net
    • The News Server entry should be: news.binary.net
    • Login is the username you were provided for your email account by Binary Net.
  11. Add connection information.
    • Connection login is the username you were provided by Binary Net.
    • Password is the password you were provided by Binary Net.

B)

There are several brands of DSL routers or switches that can be used with your bridge to extend the functionality of your network. The bridge is plugged into the phone jack on the wall. Your bridge will connect directly to the router with the Ethernet cable that came with your bridge and you will use straight through (patch) cables to link your router to the workstations. See diagrams.

For these, the connection configuration is done on the router rather than on the PC. This installation does NOT use the software that came with your SpeedStream 5200 Bridge instead you will need to follow the directions that come with the router. You will select a "PPPOE" connection type and use the username and password supplied by Binary Net. The router will be set to NAT unless you will be using static IPs on your network.
